News/Coronavirus Update

Green Lanes Re-opening Focused on Getting Back To Normal!

We are very pleased to confirm that on Monday 15th June Green Lanes will be re-opening for business at near full capacity.

Aside from being great news for individual shops, the re-opening of such a key retail space will be a welcome sight for our valued customers and a sign that things are finally on the move again after a testing lockdown period for the local community.

Of course, initially things won’t be quite the same as the situation is a new one for us all and we will endeavour to be as responsive and adaptable to the changing circumstances as we can over the coming weeks and months.

Centre management and retailers have been busy planning for this moment with new systems in place to protect staff and customers alike. There is also confidence that, based on our collective experience over the past few weeks, the North Devon public will smoothly adapt to the necessary changes that affect the way we will all shop for the foreseeable future.

So what differences will customers notice when visiting Green Lanes?

- There will be signage advising on Covid-19 protocol and socially responsible practices, such as adhering to social distancing, and this will be a prominent feature in the re-opening along with floor markings and queue systems in place at most stores.

- There will also be a new one way pedestrian traffic flow system in place, with entry to Green Lanes restricted to the two High Street facing doors. Entry to the shopping centre will be via the Tarko Lounge entrance and exit will be via the Green Lanes Café doorway.

- The Green Lanes security team will be working with individual shops to ensure health and safety measures are followed while, behind the scenes, specialist software is being used to monitor footfall numbers to minimise risk and avoid the area becoming overcrowded.

- Cleaning measures will be stepped up throughout, with Green Lanes staff focusing on key touch points throughout the centre, such as handrails, doors, lift buttons etc.

- Car parks will be open as usual (although lift access will be limited to one person/family group at a time).

- Inevitably some of the changes will impact on how shoppers can use Green Lanes. For safety reasons seated areas will be taped off (in line with social distancing guidelines) and public toilets will remain closed at this time (although there will be limited access to the disabled toilet on a request basis.

While the coming weeks may still be filled with some uncertainty, one thing that can be taken for granted is that the Green Lanes team and all of our businesses within the centre can’t wait to be up and running and once again extending a warm welcome to our customers!  For the latest up to date information regarding Covid-19 measures and news about store discounts and promotions, customers are advised to continue to visit the Green Lanes website and our social media channels.

Barnstaple’s new Tarko Lounge at Green Lanes Shopping Centre will officially open on Wednesday (July 4). Completing the new entrance to Barnstaple's Shopping Centre.

Restaurant-bar group The Lounges says its new North Devon site will create 25 jobs.

The company says it has spent £595,000 transforming the site into a family-friendly retro-inspired cosy retreat’.

It says eclectic artwork and quirky curios sit next to oversized vintage sofas and old school benches, strikingly painted table tops and statement lighting, in the style ‘much loved by Lounge aficionados’.

High Street Entrance Improvements

Rockspring, the owners of Green Lanes Shopping Centre, have developed design proposals for the improvement of the centre’s lower High Street entrance and works have started on site.

The proposals include removing a large section of the 1980s building fronting the High Street in order to create a successful connection to the centre’s internal environment and a new modern entrance. The entrance experience will be further enhanced by increasing the height of the internal mall adjacent to the entrance doors through the removal of the first floor slab over the mall. This will extend the airy feeling present in the higher portions of the malls and help to visually connect the shopping centre with the external environment of the town centre.

The new entrance will serve as a marker of the quality of shopping in Barnstaple. In conjunction with the works Green Lanes will also gain a new logo to reflect its unique character, style and the refreshed image of the shopping centre.

The proposals have been developed to retain and enhance Barnstaple’s historic fabric and character. The removal of the 1980s styled building on the corner opens the views of this historic fabric and provides the fantastic opportunity to create a contemporary entrance for the centre and a high-quality public space for the town. This public space will receive new paving to tie into the existing paving finishes of the town centre and lay out an inviting entry space for the shopping centre.

The increase in public realm at the junction of Joy Street and the High Street creates a lively environment and is the perfect location for the addition of a new cafe to the corner unit. The buzz and activity of the cafe will spill out and benefit Joy Street as well.
